The tag in HTML is a generic inline element that is primarily used for styling and targeting specific portions of text or content within a larger document. It does not have any inherent semantic meaning but serves as a container to apply CSS styles or manipulate text through scripting.

Let us deep drive into a sample HTML script with and without span tag to know the difference and its uses —

Consider the below HTML code which consists of basic
and

Document

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet consectetur adipisicing elit.
Eveniet omnis reprehenderit, optio laboriosam quam voluptate distinctio
ipsum quasi reiciendis sapiente. Recusandae quaerat odit atque.
Similique sunt sequi necessitatibus repudiandae rerum.

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet consectetur adipisicing elit.
Provident quo fugiat doloribus.
Numquam pariatur, quas tenetur tempore hic eaque aliquid tempora delectus cumque asperiores laborum?
Saepe optio nostrum facilis maxime?

In the
with id = "paraOne" is the basic
So, if we want to add styling to the content, it will be applied to the entire text present in the

In the other case of
with id = "paraTwo" to highlight a particular text we used a with some CSS styling of font-weight and color Which is applied to only text present inside the

helps to assign an id or a class to highlight the particular text.

Some common use cases for the tag:

 1. Styling: can be used to apply CSS styles such as color, font size, font weight, or background color to specific sections of text within a paragraph or heading.
 2. Targeting and Selection: By assigning a unique class or ID to a element, you can easily target and manipulate that specific portion of text using CSS or JavaScript/jQuery.
 3. Inline Text Formatting: can be used to add inline formatting to text, such as bold, italics, underline, or strikethrough, without affecting the overall structure of the document.
 4. Language Localization: can be used to mark specific phrases or words within a paragraph for translation or language-specific formatting purposes.
 5. Scripting Manipulation: can be dynamically generated or modified using JavaScript or other scripting languages to create interactive effects, highlight certain text, or perform data manipulation.

Overall, the tag provides flexibility and control over specific portions of text or content within an HTML document, allowing for targeted styling and manipulation without affecting the overall structure or semantics of the page.
